Nylon and cotton thread

The zone of Brno, in Moravia, has a long textile tradition. In the Skklep project, taking place in an old distillery, structural changes are being made in the basement. This served as a starting point for reflection.

The basement is the place of the deposit, the removed: a place that often gives us an uncomfortable feeling, where we can find objects and traditions that speak about our past and present.

In this work, the typical womanly tradition of embroidery and lace is united with the hard nylon of the physical work of miners, recalling two classically paired jobs in these lands, which are strongly connected to gender roles.

Embroidery drawings were inspired by those collected by the scholars Bibovà and Smolkovà between those dedicated to the pea plant, the same species analyzed by Mendel in Brno for his genetics studies.
